Preseason Cuties! Vets Still Got It

Kickin’ It with the Ol’ School Players

by Nkeshi Free

Yes, ladies it’s the start of another season and its time to bring back the Sideline Pass favorite “Cutie of the Week” section.  So to whet your appetites, I decided to start off with a dedication to the fine former players of the NFL in a section called “Still a Cutie.”   So for the next week, sit back and enjoy a look at the throw-back classic cuties who can give the current players a run for their money on the looks department! Get ready for Aikman, Keyshawn and Rod W! Enjoy.

Troy Aikman

Troy Aikman

Okay, seriously, with those baby blues and “All-American” good looks there is no question that Troy Aikman was the perfect fit to serve as the QB for “America’s Team,” none other than the Dallas Cowboys.  Standing at a commanding 6′ 4″, he was known for being tough and his ability to take a hit and keep getting up, until he had one concussion too many and retired in April 2001.  While the starting QB for the Cowboys, Aikman led the team to three Super Bowls including back to back championships in 1993 and 1994 over the Buffalo Bills and the 1996 win over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.  After retiring, Aikman was the first of the famed Cowboys “Triplets” to reach the NFL Hall of Fame.  The “Triplets” was comprised of Aikman and teammates Michael Irving at wide receiver and recent NFL Hall of Fame inductee, running back Emmitt Smith.  In his retirement, Aikman serves as a game day commentator for Fox Sports along with hosting a weekly sports radio show and running the Troy Aikman Foundation.  One thing’s is for sure when Aikman’s in the booth I have to remember to watch the game and not the sportscaster!  All I know is that this All-American girl can only say one thing when it comes to this fine piece of eye-candy…”How ‘Bout Them Cowboys,”  because in addition to a tradition of winning there’s a tradition of fine men!

Keyshawn Johnson

Keyshawn Johnson

Yes Lawd!  Really ladies I had to work extra hard to focus on the story and not look at this picture all day….I mean, how can I look at anything other than that smile and beautiful teeth…Whew…okay focus…focus… (lol)! Keyshawn Johnson, this former wide receiver for the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys (see what I mean about tradition of fine men, see previous Troy Aikman story), and Carolina Panthers is just a chocolate bar vision waiting to be devoured as eye candy!  In 2007 he retired after an 11-year career that included three Pro-Bowl selections, a Super Bowl win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  He is the first wide receiver to score a touchdown on Monday Night Football with four different teams.  Johnson finished his career with 814 receptions and is tied with Henry Ellard at 17th for all-time career NFL receptions.  In addition to his sports casting, Johnson is known for his ties and love of all things fashion including an interior design show on A&E.  I tell you one thing that Keyshawn can come design me, my closet and my house all day everyday as long as he keeps smiling!!

Rod Woodson

Rod Woodson by ©J. Monroe Butler II

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, my work is done!  Rod Woodson….okay carry-on!  I know age ain’t nothing but a number and this man is just getting better like fine wine….I mean somehow, they thought I was supposed to look at pictures of this man and just pick one (lol)!!  I’m glad I don’t have to worry about selecting which one, because truthfully all of the photos I saw should just be one big collage dedicated to the fineness that is Rod Woodson! Oh and let me be PERFECTLY clear, I am 100% biased about his good looks because we share the same birthday (but not the same year, so don’t get it twisted, ha-ha-ha)!!  This defensive back and what a “back” it is… inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame, was best known for his years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it was with the Baltimore Ravens that he found Super Bowl glory.  I can’t believe he was in my back yard!!  Talk about a winning combination Ray Lewis and Rod Woodson on the same team…That’s not a super team, that’s super hot!  Woodson also played with the San Francisco 49’s and Oakland Raiders and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1993.  Inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame with class of 2009, the analyst for the NFL Network on the show NFL Total Access has my TOTAL attention EVERYTIME he is on the screen!

Almost Paradise: Colts and Packers Get to Go For Glory Again

August 26th, 2010

2009 Regular Season Record: Colts 15-1; Packers 11-5

Colts Packers '08

Two teams so close to holding the Lombardi trophy face each other in a preseason game that may be great fun to watch – even if it doesn’t tell us much. The Indianapolis Colts took to the field of the Super Bowl in Miami ready to add a new ring to the collection. They were favored and walked into the playoffs having only lost one game. The Green Bay Packers anointed the arm of Aaron Rodgers (a good arm I might add) as a divining rod back to Super Bowl glory. Didn’t happen.

The Green Bay Packers were only two losses away from commanding the NFC North. Those two losses were to Brett Favre’s Vikings, which added more drama to the NFL than you’d find on the Real Housewives of Atlanta.  The playoff position may have cost the Packers the shot at playing in the big game. Try as he might last year, Rodgers wasn’t able to complete the team’s separation from Favre. Just like any breakup, the feelings are much stronger until you get the new trophy.

The Indianapolis Colts were one win away from a perfect regular season – but they chose to forgo the shot at history to keep the starters rested and healthy. With the #1 seed wrapped up, Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell put his star QB Peyton Manning on the bench. Perhaps watching Bill Belichick’s Patriots, the most recent almost-undefeated, he decided to let go of the opportunity to knock the ’72 Dolphins off the perch. During the Super Bowl, by the fourth quarter, the audience could see the momentum swing to the underdog Saints. When the clock struck 00:00, the Peyton and the crew sat dejected on the sidelines – wondering how in the heavens this happen.

We should see some great football. Tonight we get to see the two great QBs do their thing with near flawless offenses and tight defenses. It’s that “near” thing that changes the whole story.

(By the way, my opinion is that the Colts lost because they ticked off the football goddesses. You can’t cheat destiny like that. Sorry Caldwell.)

Know Your Football Positions

August 25th, 2010

Just learning the game? Here’s a brief breakdown of positions on the field during a typical game. The players may change based on the offensive or defensive scheme. Also, there are different setups for special teams plays, such as the punting unit or kickoff return team. We’ll deal with those more thoroughly throughout the season. Also, we’ll go through the nuances of each position in the Weekly Wink, the Sideline Pass Newsletter, beginning next Tuesday! Next, thanks to Patty, we’ll have a breakdown of Fantasy Football. Look for it.

Sunrise

Beautiful Sunrise

It is 5:00am and I have been at the Columbus International Airport since 4:15am.  Needless to say, I am a morning person.  I was so happy to see that Cup O’ Joe was open for business when I arrived, there were tables and chairs waiting for me to set up my “mobile office” and the free Wi-Fi is working nicely.  Some days things just fall into place.  I am grateful to God that this is one of those days.  I am flying on Delta Airlines and I don’t have to connect in Atlanta—YEAH!  For those of you who haven’t had that pleasure, it means that I don’t have to walk two miles to get to my connecting flight.

I am on my way to Ft. Lauderdale to attend the Elite Women’s Foundation Annual Gala (www.elitewomensfoundation.org).  I joined the board earlier this year after hearing about their commitment to helping women of all ages to experience optimal physical health, emotional wellness, and personal success.

I was blessed to spend this Mother’s Day with my 89 year-old mother.   So many of my friends have lost their moms and I cherish every day that I still have with mine.  Two years ago she had a series of strokes that eventually took away her independence and now she is unable to walk or care for herself.  Up until that time, she spent her days going from one event to the next support her children, her grand, great-grand and great great grand children.

Mom was the epitome of a sports grandma.   When my oldest begin to play football, she would travel back and forth to Columbus to watch him play.   As the other grandchildren got involved in sports she went to basketball games, football games, track meets and any other events she could fit into her busy schedule.   When Jay began playing for Ohio State she started following college football and even got to know names and positions of other players.  After Jay was drafted to the Raiders, she purchased the NFL Package and spent many hours watching him play.  Whether she was watching from the stands or seeing it on television, she would wear her children’s team colors and paraphernalia with matching earrings and necklace.  At 86 years old, she was still able to walk to the top of major league stadiums.  Her favorite line was “I do this for the love of my children!”

As moms, we go to great lengths to be there for our children.  I hate missing a game or any event they are involved with.   My mom use to tell me, “enjoy it now because it goes by so quickly.”  She was right.  It is hard to believe that my baby will be 18 years old next year.  For the past 26 years I have been juggling family, church, work and personal priorities and trying to keep it all balanced.  I am still trying to find that balance but it is better than it used to be.   Each year I create a football matrix for my extended family and friends to let them know where the boys are playing and which games we will attend each week.  Because the tickets are limited, I do a first-come first-served process with my huge family but make sure that anyone who hasn’t seen the boys play gets priority on tickets each season.   I also try to make sure that a family member or close friend is there to support the boys when we cannot be there.  It is a lot of fun but doesn’t leave time for much else .

I want to take this time to salute all of the moms, godmothers and surrogate mom for all you do to support your children.   For the countless times you have taken forgotten equipment and permission slips to the school; for rushing to get sports physicals with only hours notice, for all the hours manning the concession stands, for the many hours you spend in the stands in the rain, snow and hot sun; for wearing all the goofy team paraphernalia and for attending all the parent meetings and sports banquets you are truly the wind beneath your children wings.   Take time to breathe and remember this is all for the love of your children.  Enjoy the moments!

Experts recommend walking 10,000 steps a day to get in shape.

Experts recommend walking 10,000 steps a day to get in shape.

What a beautiful day!  My walking partner was out of town this morning so I decided to sleep in rather than walk at my usual time at 6:30am.  At 6:45am my youngest son, Joshua Odis, knocked on my door to let me know he had missed the school bus.  I decided this was my message from God that I needed to get up and get moving.   I took Odis to school and then decided to park at the nearby Kroger and walk on   the hills in the area.   It was so nice out that I kept extending my walk.  Before I knew it, I had walked 9,894 steps and it was not even 9am!  I felt really good and started thinking about the importance of modeling behavior that I wanted my boys to follow.

YOU Can Win a Dozen Sally’s Biscuits!

Jewell Chats with Guests

Jewell Chats with Guests

The POSH GIRL Party with a Purpose at the Ritz Carlton was an awesome event.  Although it was a cloudy day in the DC area, you would never have been able to tell by the smiles and laughter in the room. As guests browsed and shopped, Mrs. Green chatted with them about the wonderful deals – and the great causes they supported with their dollars.

Vendors were on hand from all over the country. If you wanted the perfect bag, or a pair of show-stopping stilettos, this was the spot. We chatted with handbag designers, lash experts and more. The deals were great and we found that most vendors were happy to offer great discounts to advance the selected causes. And believe it or not, we found some great football fans.

Throughout the day, Jewell’s husband and Washington Redskins legend Darrell Green worked the room and served as auctioneer. He was more than gracious with his time as guests stopped to take photos with him, ask his take on the season and much more.

We were able to chat with some of the young girls who took home dresses from Caitlin’s Closet, the foundation started by Stacy Brunell, wife of NFL quarterback Mark Brunell. The girls were all smiles after finding beautiful dresses that fit them to a tee. The mothers were smiling as well. We’ll tell you more about some of the vendors as we move through the summer. You don’t want to miss some of these great deals.

Ball Girl Gail Sideman Tells How She Blended Sports Her Career

We were delighted to have Gail Sideman as this week’s Ball Girl. She’s quite the PR guru and has keen insight into the sports world thanks to the myriad roles she’s held since college. Beginning as a writer, she found her way penning stories for the collegiate newspaper. Gail tells the story of getting a thank you note for a great article from one of the coaches – to the shocking dismay of her editor. She took that as a cue to move another side of the business.

As a professional today, Gail blends roles that give her flexibility and freedom to create the life she wants. Take a listen and hear this Wisconsin girl tell of her travels around the globe in her role for major news channels. Also, hear as she extols the benefit of proper networking – including the good old-fashioned follow-up (not always by text.)

Gail was born and reared in Wisconsin and grew up on Favre ball, so it’s been hard to let go even though he’s moved to another city. Having been exposed to the life of the athlete, she understands the importance of playing while you can. The same goes for building your own network – play while the ball is in your hands. Thanks to Gail for all her wonderful insight.

The Denver Debate

April 23rd, 2010

By Mia Jackson

Did Denver “really” lose? The team traded down twice before that trade up for Tebow. In those two trades, they received the following actually netting the players they wanted AND an extra third round pick. Shell game galore!

Denver’s 1st Day Draft Trades:
» First-round pick (No. 24): Traded to Patriots
» Third-round pick (No. 70): Traded to Ravens
» Third-round pick (No. 87)
» First-round pick (No. 13): Traded to Eagles
» Fourth-round pick (No. 113): Traded to Patriots

FOLLOW TRADES: Use the NFL Tracker to Follow Trades

Are the picks to the Ravens too much to give up if you truly believe that this is a guy to hang your hat on – literally? We don’t know. The Tebow debate will only be answered on game days. We can watch every Gruden training session, listen to each of his press conferences or call his mother, and we will know absolutely nothing about his ability to transfer his game to the pro level until he takes the field.

What I thought was best, regardless of the player, was how they came in ready and armed with a strategy: move down until no longer prudent (someone else back East does that, right?) Rumor has it, there as no move up until Buffalo was packaging a deal together to jump back in the round and pick up Tebow. We will probably never know how much of that is true. Doesn’t matter. We’re talking about the trade practice right now – taking what you have and making more of it. If someone told you that you can leave with what you wanted and more than you came with, you’d take the deal. That’s what McDaniels did. Now, it’s time for wait and see.

Drew Brees QB Draft Lessons

April 23rd, 2010

From CNNSI Vault – What they said about Drew Brees after the combine:
“If Brees held his draft position, it’s because there is little else to choose from at quarterback after the presumed No. 1, Michael Vick. Mel Kiper Jr., who ranked Brees No. 16 before the combine, drops him out of his top 25 prospects.” Check out the 2001 article here.

On occasion, the football pundits turn out to be wrong – thankfully for the Patriots and Saints, those occasions happened to lead to Super Bowl wins. I wanted to see what the word was on this year’s Super Bowl MVP, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints. For most, Drew was too short and didn’t have the arm to throw the long ball, nor the accuracy. Hmmm. What do you think now?

In the past ten years, seven different QBs have led their teams to a Super Bowl. Of the seven, three were taken after the 1st round. Tom Brady appears to be the only “hidden gem” falling to the 6th round. Brad Johnson was on the Buccaneers team, but I still wouldn’t call him a gem. That was a defensive win for the ages. So before Brady, you’d have to go back to the 11th year to find another true hidden treasure in Kurt Warner, the only underafted QB to ever win a Super Bowl.

So for the teams waiting to see who falls farther down the draft chart, don’t wait too long. Seems like the good guys go first. Of course for every great one, there’s a bust but the numbers still support the fact that it’s better to chance it. The pundits and draft experts don’t have the measuring stick that tells them how a player will develop in the three years after the draft. For that, maybe they need to hire Ms. Cleo. If not, fans just have to accept that you just don’t know until you know.

Draft Positions of Last Decade’s Super Bowl Winners (plus Kurt)
Super Bowl XLIV: Drew Brees 2nd Round, 1st Pick 2001
Super Bowl XLII/ XL: Ben Roethlisberger* 1st Round, 11th Pick

Super Bowl XXXVII: Brad Johnson 9th Round, 3rd Pick
Super Bowl XXXV: Trent Dilfer 1st Round, 6th Pick

Best and The Beast: New Look Lions

April 23rd, 2010

Detroit moved through Round 1 of the draft like a 1975 Electra 225 hot off the assembly line. The motor city has little cheer about these days with a devastated auto industry, unsavory politics and a dismal housing market. But Detroit Lion fans hold on. Suh the Beast and his draft day partner Best are ready to give citizens some city pride again – if only on Sundays.

Ndamukong Suh (Damu for short) taught us a lot during his senior year. In addition to how to say his name correctly, we learned that the Heisman Trophy finalist understands what it means to be the total package. Suh has already pledged $2.6 million of his earnings to the university to endow a scholarship and outfit the college’s gym. It’s the single largest gift to the university by a former athlete. The Defensive Tackle is considered to be one of the most dominant players coming out of the draft in years. But when he leaves the field, the next rookie picks up where he leaves off.

Jahvid Best, a running back for the University of California, was destined to be a first round pick even after a frightening injury last year. Opting to forgo his senior year, the talented ball carrier is hoping to stay healthy and on the field. His statistics suggest that he can be a game-changer and by all accounts, he has a good head on his shoulders. Supposedly, he’ll bring back feelings Lions’ fans haven’t had since Barry Sanders. If he can add another dimension for QB Matthew Stafford (a Sideline Pass Fave), I expect to see them in the playoffs in no less than three years.

Now Best and Damu, I expect you to get the De-Troit moving like a smooth deuce and a quarter. If you’re too young to know what that means, look it up!
