What a Fourth of July!
Steve Nash, the second NBA free agent domino fell – surprisingly to a longtime rival. Like me, most Lakers fans had absolutely NO idea that the sought after point guard would land in Los Angeles. Just a week ago, it didn’t seem like Nash thought he’d put on the purple & gold, either. Here’s what he said in an interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith:
“The truth is I’m a bit old school … It’ll be hard to put on a Lakers jersey. You play against them so many times in the playoffs. … I kinda have that tendency so it is strange. But as a free agent, you’re free to go anywhere you want.” Steve Nash
But looks like Kobe found the All-Star and said, Stevie – we can do this. Together, we can do this. Must have sounded like sweet music to Nash’s ears. He gets enough money and he’s close to his family which was something the Knicks couldn’t offer. That’s a long trip home and we know by his loyalty to his old team and country, Steve is a family man.

What this will mean for the Lakers can be summed up in one word: Hope! The young Oklahoma City Thunder are poised to roll through the West. LA needed another big shot, fearless player who doesn’t shy away from a challenge. But I think the largest advantage won’t come during Showtime. Nash’s maturity is most important in the locker room where he will play well to the needs of Gasol, Bynum and Artest (or whoever is left of those three.) Kobe is NOT the locker room leader; his only child tendencies are too strong. Nash can take the leader load off and let Kobe do what he does best – play ball.
The Phoenix Suns made out quite well with two first-round picks (2013 and 2014) and two second-round picks (2013 and 2015). They may use them to find another Nash level player who can serve them in the long run, but they’ll need to also build around the talent enough to play to the new star’s desire to win BIG.
Bottom line, I think Nash will look really good in the purple and gold. The Lakers jersey will complement his smile. And with that I’m going to listen to some Rufus and Chaka Khan:
He’s on his way
He’s goin’ to Hollywood
