In one week, Jaiquawn Jarrett’s life will change dramatically. Somehow, I don’t think the young man himself will change that much. Every now and again, you run across a young man like the talented Safety from Temple University who just lights up a room with his smile. There’s nothing to hide here. He LOVES to hit hard. He likes to be on the field. He LOVES to make his mother, grandmother and auntie proud. His brother and friends make him laugh.  He’s a simple man who works hard, lives well and values the love and respect given him by his adoring family.  Nana has been crying all week she says – she’s overwhelmed with pride. The family has supported him with trips down the freeway to Philly to cheer him on. The special love and care is something he appreciates. As I said, he’s NICE – on and off the field.

Hip Hop enthusiasts familiar with Mos Def will understand what a compliment it is when I say that Mr. Jarrett’s understated swagger had the lyrics to this song spinning in my head all day and night. I spent a hot Brooklyn afternoon with Jaiquawn and I felt welcomed every minute. Watching him move decisively, his on and off the field intelligence and his fierce competitiveness are enough to make an immediate impact on a team.
